WHAT IS MILLING
Milling is a cutting process in which the tool—known as the milling cutter—performs a rotary motion, while the feeding motions can be either linear or rotary. Typically, the workpiece performs the feeding motions. In most machining processes (such as turning or drilling), the feeding direction is perpendicular to the cutting direction. In milling, however, if we consider a single tooth of the cutter, the orientation of the cutting direction relative to the feeding direction continuously changes.
Milling is most commonly used for machining flat surfaces. With special types of milling cutters, it is also possible to machine curved surfaces. Using profiling cutters, you can achieve shaped cross-sections, and contour milling allows for the creation of surfaces with any desired shape.
